Piracy in Context: There Are Bigger Challenges in China
Filed in archive Law by Greg Cruey on August 10, 2008
I found a great blog post last month at BizCult that puts the problem of piracy in China into context.

Sure, intellectual property rights (IPR) are a big deal - and a problem in China. China Success Stories has a recent piece on how to secure your IPRs in China (Part 1 and Part 2). But IPR is not at the top of the list...

The BizCult piece points out a very simple truth. When a company is making more hand over fist, the fact that some guy down the road is selling cheap, low-quality knock offs of your stuff loses a lot of its emotional content. It's not so much about how you can make that guy stop as it is about how you can keep making money!

The solution to that problem seems to have more to do with negotiating government bureaucracy and regulation and solving personnel issues than with piracy.
