Picnics, Google Reader and ADT

Filed in archive Did you know on October 5, 2009

On an average day my clock goes off at 5:15 am and I hit snooze so I can sleep another nine minutes. I drag myself into the kitchen and drink fresh ground Sumatra coffee from a four-cup drip coffee maker. I sit on my back deck with the coffee and my laptop for 20 minutes or so, browsing through my China subscriptions in Google Reader.

Then I put on my Nikes and find the dog's leash. Glasgow (my energetic Fox Terrier) and I jog about two miles in a nearby park. I try to be out of the house by 6:00 am, back from the park by 6:45, out of the shower by a few minutes after 7:00, and in my car headed toward work by 7:20. Glasgow (and ADT) guards the house while I'm gone.

Today was not a normal day. Our annual company picnic meant I could sleep a little later. The fact that my car was in the shop (instead of the driveway) meant I was relying on one of the other execs from work for a ride.

So there I was, showering at 8:30 in the morning when I was usually gone already and Glasgow began to bark and the alarm started going off. I come out of the shower wrapped in towel and find two teenaged boys standing in my kitchen trying to decide how to turn my alarm off. I guess they thought they had my routine figured out. They hadn't counted on the company picnic...
