Capital Magazine Interprets China's Private Equity Market

news reporting has taken on a wider and more prominent educational role in advising the increasing number of private equity investors. The country now has a plethora of Chinese financial media vying for a slice of the burgeoning 100 million Chinese shareholders all purporting to follow the financial news for market information.According to Professor Nailene Chou Wiest at the Journalism and Media Studies Centre at the University of Hong Kong, " fierce competition among the financial news publications has reshuffled the positions of the dominant players from the early financial reporting years. Papers such as China Business Times(中華工商時報)and China Business(中國"營報)have already yielded their market positions to the new titles such as Economic Observer ("濟觀察報)and 21st Century Economic Herald 21(Ö紀"濟報導."
One publication that is quietly developing a leadership position in reporting on China's private equity market is Capital magazine. The Beijing-based glossy monthly is not cheap by Chinese standards since an overseas subscription costs nearly $10 a copy and $96 for an annual subscription.
BNI, the parent company of Capital magazine, has 18 employees. A glance at a recent issue revealed articles on new buyout funds and also explains and interprets the government's recent rulings related to foreign VCs investment, while another special feature explains the myriad of tax questions in M&A. Furthermore, there are formal Chinese finance associations which provide timely translated financial articles and information to many overseas Chinese.
"Capital is emerging as the leading media of VC and PE in China," claims Adam Xie, the editor-in-chief of the 12 year-old financial magazine.
With China's continued financial reforms, and various edicts on foreign investment, it's no wonder that Chinese publications, like Capital magazine are making dramatic in-roads with new global readers in order to help them make better financial decisions in the Middle Kingdom.
